They've done it again. The second annual
Energy Independence Day was celebrated on Sunday July 11th, 1 - 4 pm, under the wind turbine by Easton's Pond in Middletown. Over 70 exhibitors helped local families learn about the methods and importance of saving energy. There were lots of demonstrations, quizzes, games and other attractions for children. Check out the
Photos page.

A major project, a Neighborhood Energy Challenge, is underway to encourage (and help) households save money on energy. AI residents sign up and get assistance on conserving energy - not to mention parties, prizes, and publicity - and can expect significant energy savings in their pockets at the end of the year-long Challenge. Go to the
Challenge website for more information.

A $500,000 two-year effort to plan a new transportation mix for Aquidneck Island is underway. Will the planners recommend real climate-friendly changes - or just more auto-friendly "improvements?" We're telling the planners what comfortable, convenient, low-emission transportation we'd like to be using 10 and 20 years from now. Come help Cool Aquidneck Island, The Sierra Club, and other environmentalists reach a consensus on what will constitute planning success, and how to let our views be known to the study's Steering Committee.

Last year's Energy Independence Day was July 5th, 2009. Cool Aquidneck Island and other organizations held an energy fair to highlight how Rhode Islanders can reduce oil imports and greenhouse gases at the same time. Hundreds of visitors came to see the Portsmouth wind turbine and the exhibits of 25 local companies and organizations.
