Thames Street under water

flooded_parrot.JPGWe've produced pictures that bring home the real possibility that much of what we value on Aquidneck Island could be under water. It's easy to do, and we need to figure out how to employ this sort of image in persuading islanders to lead our state in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

ann_st_flooded.jpgWe are not the only ones to do this. Here's an image produced by [WWW]RI Sea Grant, sponsored by NOAA, which shows what the Ann Street Pier would look like at a spring high tide if the sea rose three feet. This is right in the middle of the Newport waterfront, with the Armory at the right and Thames Street just behind it. See many other similar images on the Sea Grant site.

In Photoshop we merge two photos: Thames Street today and the water surface somewhere else. Similar pictures have has already been done by Northeast Sea Grant at other well-known points in Narragansett Bay.

People who want to build by the sea need to see these images. Likewise, we should realize that not only our buildings but our sewer systems will be flooded.

NOAA's Coastal Resource Management has lots of data about coastal flooding, including a simulation of a storm pushing the higher sea-level clear across the Newport Golf Club into Newport Harbor. We should get these data and figure out how to make the most of them.

Should we add images of our political leaders standing in the shallows?

Pictures tell a stronger story than words:

(For instance, see the suggested Project Thermograms).

We need ideas for how to best use the images, without seeming over-the-top alarmist. We can print 500 postcards for under $40, but how can we make them part of a campaign?

Get people thinking about what a three-foot rise in sea level would mean to our island. Provide an attention-getting image available to other projects (publicity, postcard invitations, posters, whatever).
